France is one of the world’s leading wine producers, with grapes being grown in many regions since Roman times. Many of the most well-known grape varieties (including chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and shiraz) have their ancestral home in France; and many wine terms – from terroir to appellation – also originate there. With such a long history of wine production, it’s no surprise that the food and wine of France have evolved to marry so well together. Here are four classic French wines which I hope you’ll enjoy with our four menus.
Riserva R & M Rosé-de-Loire 2021 AOC
This dry rosé comes from Alliance, a co-operative of seven Loire Valley wine producers. It’s made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc and I love the way the pale pink colour plays off against our duck breast and the elegant fruit wraps the braised lettuce and orange sauce together.
Vieux Naudin Rouge 2019 Bordeaux Superieur AOC
The wines of Bordeaux have been among the most coveted throughout history for their depth of flavour and longevity. From St Michel de Fronsac on the right bank of the River Garonne, this mid-weight wine is predominantly merlot, with about 20% cab sav and 10% cab franc, and works a treat with our Axoa from Espelette, just a couple of hours south.
Joseph Cattin Riesling 2020 Alsace AOC
Alsace produces some of France’s most food-friendly white wines and I especially love the rieslings from this region. A natural match for our Alsatian Tarte Flambée, this dry riesling has great minerality and acidity that cuts perfectly through the richness of the burnt butter and pommes dauphinoise in this week’s menu.
François Labet Cuvee Loraine Blanc de Blancs Brut
We had to have some French fizz in this month’s collection. This dry cuvee of classic Champagne grapes, pinot noir and chardonnay, rounded out with lesser known ugni blanc and rolle, is a great balance to the richness of our soufflé and salade Lyonnaise. The bubbles make a refreshing match for the tart Tatin too if there’s a splash left by dessert!
