In collaboration with Dimitri Dardanis and Simon Adriatico of Drink Greek
Complete your vicarious tour of Greece with these drinks chosen to complement Janni’s food.
Ancient Greeks were one of the foremost producers of wine in their day and, along with the Romans, responsible for spreading vines to much of Europe. While the modern Greek wine industry was tainted by bad retsina for a long time, today Greek wines are enjoying a much deserved renaissance as wine lovers discover boutique producers and indigenous varieties found nowhere else.

Menu 1 – Mitravelas Red on Black
This grenache-like drop is made from 100% Agiorgitiko, Greece’s most popular red grape. I love the hint of smokiness with Janni’s slow-roasted lamb shoulder and the soft, rounded tannins with the slippery orzo and creamy skordalia. It’s even better if it’s been in the fridge for 30 minutes or so before it’s poured.
Menu 2 – Tetramythos Roditis Natur
With a pleasing touch of citrus, this organic wine from Patras cuts perfectly through the oil-rich fillo in Janni’s wild weed pie. Roditis, a widely-planted native grape was once mainly associated with retsina; in this lean, balanced drop we see what it’s capable of in the right hands.
Menu 3 – Amuse Blanc
This blend of malagousia with a touch of gewürztraminer has lovely notes of stone fruit and roses. It’s my pick of this pack and a deserving match for Janni’s elegant salt-baked spatchcock. It’s full-bodied enough to work beautifully with the currant-studded barley pilaf and has a deliciously zesty finish to harmonise with the fennel salad.
Menu 4 – Tetramythos Mavro Kalavrytino Natur
This is a great picnic wine, perfect lightly chilled and delicious with both the grilled red capsicum and bacon and egg pie. It has lovely notes of dark dried fruit and berries and an enchanting hint of warm spice.
