Grape vines came to Australia with Britain’s First Fleet and were planted at Farm Cove where the Royal Botanic Gardens now stand. It wasn’t a very successful start to Australian viticulture as the vines perished, but successive plantings in the Hunter, Yarra, Swan and Barossa Valleys proved promising and Australia’s wine industry was on its way. This month’s wine pairing features four established varieties from four iconic Aussie regions. Cheers!

Menu 1 – Ernest Schuetz Family Reserve Chardonnay 2021 (Mudgee, NSW)
A dish as creamy as our champ-topped fisherman’s pie cries out for a buttery chardonnay. I love the oaky, rich aroma of a classic Aussie chardy but am less enamoured of a heavily oaked flavour. So I’m very pleased with this drop that walks the line nicely with a lighter flavour than the rich buttery nose suggests and a lovely soft finish.
Menu 2 – Reschke Bull Trader Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 (Coonawarra, SA)
If I’m drinking cab sauv I want it to be from Coonawarra, where the famous terra rosa imparts that signature whiff of green capsicum and tomato leaf. The slightly herbal notes in this Aussie classic marry well with the thyme in our Irish stew and the accompanying creamed spinach.
Menu 3 – Windance Sauv Blanc Semillon 2021 (Margaret River, WA)
This sauv blanc heavy blend of organic fruit has a wonderful tropical nose and a nice lemony zing on the palate. It’ll harmonise with and balance both the kedgeree and the buttery roasted chicken in this menu.
Menu 4 – Brockenchak Zip Line Shiraz 2020 (Barossa Valley, SA)
I love the elegance of wines from the microclimate of the Eden Valley, a higher – and therefore cooler – sub-region within the warmer Barossa. This one has a promising dark berry aroma that leads into flavours of dark cherry, blackberry and a hint of cocoa that nicely balances the richness of our beef Wellington and Simon’s gorgeous gravy!
