Best Dishes in Sydney 2017

When eating out there’s always the dilemma of whether to try somewhere (or something) new, or stick with somewhere (or something) you know and love.

Best Dishes in Sydney 2017 - Coconut turnover - Momofuku (Hero Shot)

I enjoy discovering new restaurants and new dishes, but these five keep me coming back to some of my favourite restaurants time and again – and there’s no question that I’ll be ordering them every time I’m there. Here’s my list of the best dishes in Sydney in 2017 (find more of my favourite sweet treats from that year here.)

Best Dishes in Sydney 2017 - Runner Bean Fritters - Bibo

Runner Bean Fritters Bibo Wine Bar
I’m so predictable where these irresistible snacks are concerned, that they usually just appear in front of me at my favourite wine bar around the same time my first glass of wine arrives. Young green beans in a thin crisp batter – eating your veggies never tasted so good!

Best Dishes in Sydney 2017 - Culattelo on Polenta Cake - Bennelong

Culatello on Polenta Hotcake Bennelong Cured & Cultured Bar
Sweet, pale pink curls of raw black Berkshire ham, from the centre of the leg, piled onto a warm soft-inside-crisp-outside polenta, popcorn, parmesan and pine nut hotcake, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle of salt. Need I say more?

Best Dishes in Sydney 2017 - Chive Dumplings - Long Chim

Chive Cakes Long Chim Sydney
I love contrast and texture in food – and these bite-sized snacks have it in spadefuls. Crisp on the bottom, chewy on the top and full of soft green garlic chives, while the dark soy and chilli sauce adds salt, sweet and heat. I can eat an awful lot of these!

Best Dishes in Sydney 2017 - Dry-aged Beef Rib - Firedoor

Dry-aged Beef Rib Firedoor
With so many delicious veggies around, meat has to be amazing to catch my attention. Sawed from a huge chunk hanging behind the counter (238-days dry-aged today), sprinkled liberally with salt and singed by flames jumping up from the coals as fat melts on to them. Tender, juicy, smoky – yes please!

Best Dishes in Sydney 2017 - Cocont Turnover - Momofuku

Coconut Turnover Momofuku Seiobo (CLOSED)
The bar menu at Momofuku warns that this dessert takes 20 minutes – what they don’t tell you is that it’s huge and best shared. Warm from the oven, flaky, soft, sweet and rich with grated coconut, topped with a thick finger-licking layer of cream cheese frosting.

Roberta organises really enjoyable and relaxed dinners where you not only get to eat delicious food from a wide range of cuisines, but also find out more about the cooking techniques and produce with the chefs and producers. I highly recommend 'Be Inspired' dinners.

Went on the Duck & Pinot tour wonderfully hosted and curated by Roberta - thank you. There was a lot of duck to eat and other dishes as well. Plus I learned about wine and the people who run the restaurants. An event for multiple types of occasions. Can't wait for the next one.

What an amazing morning touring Sydney Produce Market with Roberta - meeting the growers & agents of some amazing produce & tasting things along the way. My favourites were the red & yellow prickly pears, jujubes, longans, & fresh pistachios. Next was Gozleme for breakfast in Auburn then a tour & tasting at Gima Turkish supermarket & Harkola Middle Eastern warehouse. Highly recommended.

I recently joined Roberta with friends & colleagues on the Duck & Pinot Walk - incredible afternoon visiting 3 duck restaurants, each very different to the other. Superbly organised! Roberta's first hand knowledge of each dish and her relationship with the restaurant owners made for an extremely enjoyable & memorable time. Would recommend this for families, work functions or just friends getting together.
