Top 5 Lunch with a View
I’ve been accused of featuring the eastern suburbs too heavily in my Top 5 lists … but I can’t help it if there’s a concentration of great eats (and drinks) in that part of town. So this week I’m delighted to be celebrating something that the northern suburbs (my home turf) have in abundance – great views! Spring is in the air, though the evenings are still cool, making it the perfect time to enjoy a long leisurely lunch with friends and a fantastic outlook. Here are five of my favourite lunch spots with wonderful views … and only one of them is in the eastern suburbs!
Jonah’s Whale Beach
I love sitting on Jonah’s clifftop deck, with the waves breaking far below, feeling a million miles from anywhere. I’m also rather keen on Logan Campbell’s pasta (his time at Lucio’s shows!), or the burrata with peaches, yuzu and chicken skin, and a glass from Luke Collard’s wonderful wine list.
Regatta Rose Bay
The thrill here, apart from superb cooking, is watching the seaplanes land and take off. From fun tuna tartare cones to classic sirloin with Café de Paris and frites, lunch on this well-appointed jetty combines great food, service and wine with some of Sydney’s finest views.
Cottage Point Inn Cottage Point
Back on the north side, one of those seaplanes is landing on Cowan Creek in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park alongside Cottage Point Inn. Guests share the deck with kookaburras while lunching on local seafood and meat prepared with Michelin-starred chef Guillaume Zika’s light French touch.
My favourite harbour view is from the upper level of the front sail of the Sydney Opera House, looking straight out at the Bridge. Preferably while snacking on Peter Gilmore’s innovative ‘cured & cultured’ menu and the likes of yabbies with buckwheat pikelets, lemon jam and cultured cream.
Pilu at Akuna Bay Akuna Bay
What’s better than a long casual Sunday lunch with friends and family? Check out the yachts over aperitivi on the deck, then enjoy Giovanni Pilu’s shared lunch feast (just $65 per person or $25 for under 12s) with antipasti, pasta, main course and dessert served family-style in the centre of the table.
