Complete your vicarious trip to Indonesia with these wines chosen to complement the four menus. In collaboration with Pip, Justin, Brendan & Alice Jarrett of See Saw Wines.

See Saw Wines red grapes

Orange is one of my favourite Aussie wine regions, and See Saw is one of my favourite wineries. Pip and Justin Jarrett have been making wine in Orange for over 30 years with fruit from their three vineyards, ranging from 700 to 900 metres above sea level, all of which are now certified organic. Today their children Brendan and Alice work alongside them to help bring their deliciously food-friendly wines to market. I’m delighted to share these four delicious cool-climate drops with you alongside my four Indonesian menus.

Menu 1 – Balance Prosecco 2023
Fizz feels festive – and Hasan’s chicken satay and my tum are designed for sharing. This bright sparkler has lots of crisp apple and citrus on the palate and some lovely floral aromas that make it a great partner for the spicy fish paste and rich peanut sauce in this menu. I’d even drink some with the sop buah if you get to dessert!

Menu 2 – Balance Pinot Noir 2023
I love a juicy pinot noir with rich meat dishes, and you don’t get much richer than beef cooked in coconut milk for three hours. This wine has plenty of bright cherry aroma and flavour with elegant tannins and a lovely clean finish. Pop it in the fridge for half an hour before serving if you like.

Menu 3 – Balance Pinot Gris 2023
Pinot gris can take on many forms. This version has a lovely balance of acid and fruit that’s a great match for the spicy tomato sauce and rich coconut rice in this menu. There’s a hint of candied lemon on the nose, lovely juicy flavour and a good long finish.

Menu 4 – Gee Gee 2022
I saved the best ‘til last, this slightly cloudy watermelon-coloured beauty is my favourite type of wine! Eighteen days on skins extracted plenty of colour from the pinot gris and the lovely musky, rosewater nose is typical of gewürztraminer. It has enough body to meet the tangy, salty, spice of the chicken – and the touch of tannin from the skin contact cleans up the richness of the nasi goreng and corn fritters really well. See the video below to learn why it’s such a special wine.
