Matching wine with Thai food can be tricky due to the diversity of dishes and intensity of flavours. Thankfully the world of wine is diverse and there are styles and grapes that pair beautifully with Thai flavours. Check out my simple guidelines for matching wines with Thai flavours on the right and enjoy this month’s suggested wine matches.

Menu 1 – Ta-Ku Pinot Noir (Sth Island, NZ) 2020

I love a soft chilled red with Thai food and this juicy New Zealand pinot noir is great popped in the fridge for 30 minutes or so before serving. Its plum and cherry notes blend well with the tamarind-dressed salad and its touch of spice is perfect with the aromatic beef (or tuna) skewers.

Menu 2 – MacKenzie William 1896 Riesling (Eden Valley, SA) 2018

Including wine made from some of Australia’s oldest vines, this dry riesling has the complexity and citrusy zing to marry beautifully with our crunchy deep-fried spring rolls and the slippery, salty, sweetness of rice noodles doused in yellow bean sauce.

Menu 3 – Bondi Rosé (Hunter Valley, NSW) 2021

This pale Provençal-looking rosé is a blend of sangiovese, cab franc and grenache. There’s a touch of sweetness to balance the chilli jam and nice crisp acid to clean up the deep-fried chicken. It’s an easy quaffer to enjoy with this diverse menu.

Menu 4 – Cantina Kellerei Tramin Gewürztraminer 2019

The spice in this classic Südtirol gewürz marries beautifully with the five spice eggs, while the touch of lychee fruitiness is a great foil for the green curry. The finish is dry and refreshing, setting your palate up perfectly for the next mouthful of flavour.

Grape Vines
Matching Wine with Thai Food

Here’s a few simple guidelines for matching wine with Thai flavours:

  • Off-dry wines with a touch of sweetness – you almost can’t go wrong with Alsatian or German rieslings.
  • Gewürztraminer is another safe bet with its lychee and rose aromas and fuller-flavour that holds its own with bold tastes and chilli.
  • The herbaceousness of a good sauvignon blanc (Adelaide Hills rather than Marlborough) is a natural with herb-laced dishes such as salads.
  • Some fuller-bodied whites, like chenin blanc (especially off-dry), can work well.
  • Rosés often pair well, especially ones with a touch of fruit on the nose and palate.
  • Bubbles can be refreshing, especially with deep-fried dishes.
  • Funky natural wines made with some skin-contact hold their own well with bold Thai flavours.
  • Light to medium-bodied reds, like pinot noir (Burgundy), gamay (Beaujolais) and some fruity grenaches, work well; especially ones that can take a light chilling.

We made the pot-sticker dumplings and bang bang chicken from the Chinese class the other night. Once again both exceeded our expectations. My husband keeps saying it’s better than going out to restaurants as the recipes and quality are amazing.

Thank you for stocking our pantry with such authentic Ingredients and quality produce. We really like the flexibility of cooking over a couple of days and changing the order we cook the dishes in when we want to. And I love listening to the themed playlist while cooking.

Food, wine and travel! Three of my favourite things! Be Inspired with Roberta has been a wonderful experience and given me more confidence in the kitchen. I have learnt so much, cooked things I never would have attempted without Roberta’s excellent videos, and used ingredients I have never tried before.

I'm a competent cook whose learned so much from Roberta's online cooking classes. The recipes are yummy and Roberta’s video guidance offers so many little tips to improve flavour and organise the flow of preparation. I enjoy her warmth, sense of humour, and ability to giggle at herself when she occasionally messes up.
